Rose, Bud, Thorn – A daily ritual for connection
Some rituals are so simple they almost feel too small to matter. But often, it’s the smallest ones that weave the deepest threads of connection.
One of my favourite rituals to share with my family is called Rose, Bud, Thorn. It’s a gentle way to pause, reflect, and notice the shape of the day – what bloomed, what stung, and what’s still to come.
🌹 Rose – The Bloom
A moment of joy, gratitude, or delight. Something that made you smile today.
🌵 Thorn – The Challenge
A challenge, frustration, or moment of discomfort. The part of the day that didn’t feel so smooth.
This is where honesty is welcomed and where empathy is built.
🌱 Bud – The Promise
Something you’re looking forward to tomorrow, next week, or further ahead.

Make it Yours
We’ve chosen to re-order the tradition in our family to Rose, Thorn, Bud so it always ends with anticipation and hope. It’s a way of teaching ourselves (and our children) that even in the messiness, there’s something beautiful waiting to unfold.
Why This Ritual Matters
-
It slows us down.
-
It creates space for both gratitude and honesty.
-
It teaches optimism, even after a thorn-filled day.
Try it Tonight
You don’t need a script, props, or preparation. Just ask three simple questions:
-
What was your Rose today?
-
What was your Thorn?
-
What’s your Bud?
That’s it. A daily ritual that takes minutes, but leaves a lasting imprint.
